Contact Me

I’d love to hear from you!    judybudreau AT

I specialize in developmental editing — working with writers of all sorts to craft and clarify their fiction, nonfiction, creative and business prose to prepare for publication. Please contact me to discuss the specifics of your project — the first hour or so is free, and I’ll give you an estimate of my fee before we commit to working together. I also work with fellow writers at Lake Superior Writers for a reduced fee; visit their web site if you’re interested in joining.

Artist Statements: I’m getting more requests from artists for help in crafting their artist statements after teaching at the Textile Center in Minneapolis, and helping Jerome Foundation grant winners. I LOVE working with artists. Get in touch if you’d like my help, and read this page if you want to get started on your own. Arts organizations, please get in touch if you’d like to talk about a workshop for artists in your community.

Life Stories: I have long experience in helping people tell stories from their lives, and I especially enjoy working with older adults. I also write life stories/personal history from one-on-one interviews. I can coach you through the writing and editing of your stories, or help you organize photos, letters or documents to tell your story. I’m a volunteer with the Veterans’ History Project at the Library of Congress, recording interviews with veterans free of charge. Please let me know if you are interested in any of these services.

Audio recording: Some people prefer to tell their stories, rather than writing them. There is nothing like hearing someone speak their story in their own voice. I offer digital recordings with or without written transcription, and can provide CDs or mp3 files.

Writing, Editing:  I also have extensive experience in commercial, non-profit and feature writing, and can help you craft a message that will engage your audience.

Research: I specialize in historical research, particularly about Minnesota and the Upper Midwest, and have access to several public and private archives.

Writing workshops: Several times each year, I teach writing workshops out in the community at places like libraries, art centers, senior centers, genealogical societies, adult education, etc. More information about arranging or attending my writing workshops here.

  1. Wonderful!
You found the way…and you share it just right!
Every word, every thought seemed a link to really living.
I am so in awe of your way with them!

  2. Good afternoon Judy.
In 1993, as a non-traditional college student. I wrote a 12-page short story in an English Lit class. Everyone, including the instructor cried at the ending. After graduating, I put it away and went on with life.
Fast forward about twenty years. Retired in 2014 and found my little story. Since then, I’ve made it into a 600+ page manuscript Rough New Prizes. (My doctor’s secretary read it in four days… couldn’t put it down!)
Because of its ending, I was forced to write Book II The Frailest Leaves of Me. I know how it will end – just have to get there. (And yes, this will be a trilogy).
I am interested in a professional editor. If you’re in the market, please let me know.
I’ll tell you more at the time. Thank you.
